In Troubling Vision, acclaimed scholar Tina Campt explores the complex and often troubled relationship between performance, visuality, and blackness. Through a series of incisive essays, Campt examines how blackness has been represented and performed in various cultural contexts, from the minstrel shows of the 19th century to the contemporary art world.

Campt argues that blackness has historically been seen as a spectacle, something to be gazed at and consumed. This has led to a long history of commodification and exoticization of blackness, which has had a profound impact on the ways in which black people are seen and experienced in society.

In Troubling Vision, Campt challenges us to rethink the ways in which we see and experience blackness. She argues that we need to move beyond the binary of black as spectacle and black as invisible. Instead, we need to recognize the complexity and diversity of blackness, and to see black people as full and equal members of society.

Troubling Vision is a groundbreaking book that makes a major contribution to the study of race, performance, and visuality. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in understanding the complex and often troubled relationship between blackness and representation.
