A Childhood in the Jim Crow South

Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. Her parents were divorced when she was three years old, and she was raised by her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Stamps was a small town in the Jim Crow South, and Angelou was subjected to racism and discrimination from a young age. She was called names, spat on, and even threatened with violence. But Angelou never let it break her spirit. She was a strong and determined child, and she refused to be defined by the racism that surrounded her.

A Rise to Fame

Angelou began writing poetry as a young girl. She found solace in words, and she used her poetry to express her feelings about the world around her. In 1957, Angelou published her first book of poetry, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The book was a critical and commercial success, and it launched Angelou's career as a writer. Angelou went on to write dozens of books of poetry, memoirs, and essays. She also wrote plays, screenplays, and television shows. Angelou's work has been translated into more than 30 languages, and she has received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

A Personal Life

Maya Angelou was married three times. Her first marriage was to Tosh Angelos, a Greek sailor. The couple had one son, Guy. Angelou's second marriage was to Paul du Feu, a South African writer. The couple had one son, Koli. Angelou's third marriage was to Raoul Pellissier, a Haitian businessman. The couple had no children. Angelou was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she loved spending time with her family. She was also a generous and caring friend, and she often opened her home to people in need.

A Legacy of Love, Loss, and Triumph

Maya Angelou died on May 28, 2014, at the age of 86. She left behind a legacy of love, loss, and triumph. Angelou was a survivor, a fighter, and a poet. She used her words to speak out against injustice and to inspire hope in others. Angelou was a true American hero, and her work will continue to inspire generations to come.
