In the 50 years since Zimbabwe gained independence from British colonial rule, the country has been plagued by tyranny and oppression. The regime of Robert Mugabe, who ruled the country for 37 years, was characterized by widespread human rights abuses, corruption, and economic mismanagement. Mugabe's successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has promised to usher in a new era of democracy and prosperity, but his government has been marred by continued repression and violence.
In her new book, The Struggle Continues: 50 Years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe, award-winning journalist and human rights activist Jestina Mukoko provides a unique insider's perspective on the country's tumultuous history. Mukoko has been at the forefront of the fight against Mugabe's regime, and her book is a testament to the courage and resilience of the Zimbabwean people.
Mukoko begins her book with a brief overview of Zimbabwe's history, from the pre-colonial period to the present day. She then provides a detailed account of the Mugabe regime, focusing on the human rights abuses that were committed under his rule. Mukoko also discusses the role of the international community in supporting Mugabe's regime, and she argues that the West must do more to support the Zimbabwean people in their struggle for democracy.
In the final part of her book, Mukoko looks to the future of Zimbabwe. She argues that the country has the potential to be a thriving democracy, but that this will only be possible if the government respects the rule of law and protects the human rights of its citizens. Mukoko also calls on the international community to continue to support the Zimbabwean people in their struggle for freedom.
The Struggle Continues is a powerful and moving account of the ongoing struggle for freedom and democracy in Zimbabwe. Written by one of the country's leading human rights activists, the book provides a unique insight into the challenges facing the Zimbabwean people. Mukoko's book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the history of Zimbabwe, or in the global struggle for human rights.
