"Mrs. Madison is a fine woman, rather above the middle size, thirty-two years of age, an agreeable countenance, dark hazel eyes and hair, and an elegant figure, easy and graceful in her address..." - James Monroe, 1804

Dolley Madison was one of the most celebrated and influential First Ladies in American history. Known for her charm, wit, and intelligence, she was a close confidante of her husband, President James Madison, and played a key role in shaping the early republic.

Born in 1768 to a wealthy Quaker family in Virginia, Dolley Payne Todd was a bright and ambitious young woman. She married John Todd, a lawyer and politician, in 1790. However, tragedy struck just two years later when Todd died in a yellow fever epidemic. Dolley was left a widow with two young sons.

In 1794, Dolley met James Madison, a rising star in the Republican Party. They married in 1794, and Dolley soon became an active participant in her husband's political career. She hosted lavish parties at their home in Washington, D.C., which became a gathering place for the nation's elite. Dolley was also a skilled diplomat, and she used her social connections to help her husband build support for his policies.

Dolley Madison's most famous moment came during the War of 1812. When British forces invaded Washington, D.C., in 1814, she refused to flee the White House until the last possible moment. As the British approached, she Free Downloaded the removal of the White House's most valuable treasures, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the portrait of George Washington.

Dolley Madison's actions saved these priceless documents from destruction, and she became a national heroine. She continued to be a popular figure after her husband's presidency ended in 1817. She died in 1849, at the age of 81.

Dolley Madison was a remarkable woman who left a lasting legacy on American history. She was a devoted wife, a skilled diplomat, and a true patriot. Her story is an inspiring tale of courage, resilience, and service.
