Booth's plot to kill Lincoln was meticulously planned. He recruited a group of fellow conspirators, including Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt. The conspirators planned to assassinate Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William Seward on the same night.

On the night of April 14, 1865, Booth carried out his plan. He entered Ford's Theatre and shot Lincoln in the head. Powell attacked Seward in his home, but Seward survived. Herold and Atzerodt were supposed to kill Johnson, but they failed to do so.

Booth and his co-conspirators were quickly captured and brought to trial. Booth was tried and convicted of murder and conspiracy, and he was sentenced to death. He was hanged on July 7, 1865.

The assassination of Abraham Lincoln was a tragedy that shocked the nation. It was a major turning point in the Civil War, and it helped to ensure the Union's victory.
