Escape to Freedom

In 1827, Truth escaped from slavery with the help of Isaac and Maria Van Wagenen, a Quaker couple who lived near her plantation.

Truth's escape was a dangerous and difficult journey. She had to travel through dense forests and across swollen rivers. She was also pursued by slave catchers.

But Truth was determined to be free. She traveled for weeks, and she finally reached Philadelphia, where she found refuge in a Quaker community.

Abolitionist and Women's Rights Activist

Once she was free, Truth became an active abolitionist and women's rights activist. She spoke out against slavery and discrimination, and she fought for the rights of women.

Truth's speeches were powerful and moving. She spoke from her own experience, and she shared her story with audiences around the country.
