A True Crime Story of Racial Injustice and the Power of the Press
On a sweltering summer night in 1955, a 14-year-old boy named Emmett Till was brutally murdered in Mississippi. The crime shocked the nation and became a catalyst for the civil rights movement. Midnight In Mississippi is a gripping true crime account of the Till murder and the subsequent trial of the two white men accused of the crime. The book follows the investigation and trial from the perspective of the journalists who covered the story, and it provides a powerful and moving account of a senseless tragedy.
The book begins with the arrival of Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam in Money, Mississippi, where Till was visiting his relatives. Bryant and Milam accused Till of whistling at Bryant's wife, Carolyn, and they took him away at gunpoint. Till's body was found three days later in the Tallahatchie River, weighted down with a cotton gin fan. He had been beaten and shot.
The murder of Emmett Till sparked outrage across the country. The NAACP sent a team of lawyers to Mississippi to investigate the crime, and the FBI opened a civil rights investigation. However, the trial of Bryant and Milam was a travesty of justice. The all-white jury acquitted the two men in less than an hour, and they were never punished for their crime.
Midnight In Mississippi is a powerful indictment of the racism and injustice that prevailed in the South during the 1950s. The book also sheds light on the important role that the press played in covering the Till murder and bringing the story to the attention of the world.
