Charlotte, North Carolina is a city with a rich hockey history. The first organized hockey game in Charlotte was played in 1956, and the city has been home to several minor league hockey teams over the years.

The most successful hockey team in Charlotte history is the Charlotte Checkers. The Checkers were founded in 1956 and played in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) until 1977. The Checkers won the EHL championship in 1960 and 1962.

In 1977, the Checkers moved to the American Hockey League (AHL). The Checkers played in the AHL until 1982, when they folded. The Checkers were revived in 1993 and have played in the ECHL since then.

The Checkers have won the ECHL championship four times, in 1995, 1996, 2008, and 2010. The Checkers are the only team to have won four ECHL championships.

In addition to the Checkers, Charlotte has been home to several other minor league hockey teams, including the Charlotte Hornets, the Charlotte Thunderbirds, and the Charlotte Rush.

The Charlotte Hornets were founded in 1995 and played in the ECHL until 2003. The Hornets were owned by the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes and served as the Hurricanes' minor league affiliate.

The Charlotte Thunderbirds were founded in 2006 and played in the ECHL until 2010. The Thunderbirds were owned by the Carolina Hurricanes and served as the Hurricanes' minor league affiliate.

The Charlotte Rush were founded in 2010 and played in the ECHL until 2015. The Rush were owned by the Florida Panthers and served as the Panthers' minor league affiliate.

Today, the Charlotte Checkers are the only professional hockey team in Charlotte. The Checkers play their home games at Bojangles' Coliseum.
