In 1945, the United States entered World War II. Julius was drafted into the army, and Ethel stayed home to take care of their children. After the war, Julius returned to his job as an electrical engineer, and Ethel continued to work as a secretary.

In 1949, Julius was approached by a Soviet agent. The agent asked Julius to spy on the United States for the Soviet Union. Julius agreed, and he recruited Ethel to help him.

Ethel and Julius spied on the United States for several years. They passed on information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. In 1950, they were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit espionage.

The trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg was a sensation. The government accused them of treason, and the public was outraged. The Rosenbergs were found guilty and sentenced to death.

Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were executed at Sing Sing Prison in 1953. They were the first American civilians to be executed for espionage.
