About the Author
Maureen Lipke is a retired schoolteacher who has always been fascinated by history. She has written several books about the history of the American West, including _Josephte Sarcee Wife of Jean Baptiste Bruneau, Joseph Paul Durand and Jean_.
Book Description
Josephte Sarcee was a remarkable woman who lived a life of adventure and hardship. She was born into the Sarcee tribe in present-day Alberta, Canada, in 1825. At a young age, she was captured by the Blackfoot and forced to marry a Blackfoot warrior. She eventually escaped and returned to her own tribe, but she was never able to forget the terror and brutality she had experienced.
In 1842, Josephte married Jean Baptiste Bruneau, a French-Canadian fur trader. The couple had three children together, but their marriage was often difficult. Bruneau was a heavy drinker and gambler, and he frequently abused Josephte. In 1854, she left him and took her children with her.
Josephte then married Joseph Paul Durand, a French-Canadian farmer. The couple had four children together, and they lived a happy and stable life. Durand was a kind and loving husband, and he treated Josephte with respect.
In 1882, Josephte's first husband, Jean Baptiste Bruneau, died. She was now a widow, and she decided to return to her home village in Alberta. She lived there for the rest of her life, and she died in 1903.
Josephte Sarcee was a remarkable woman who overcame many challenges in her life. She was a loving mother and a strong and independent woman. Her story is an inspiration to us all.
