Early Life and Career

Victor Krulak was born in Denver, Colorado, on January 18, 1913. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. After graduating from college, Krulak joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1934.

In 1936, Krulak was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He served in various assignments, including as a platoon commander in the 4th Marine Regiment in China. In 1941, Krulak was promoted to captain and assigned to the 2nd Marine Division.

World War II

During World War II, Krulak served with distinction in the Pacific Theater. He participated in the Guadalcanal campaign, the Tarawa invasion, and the Battle of Iwo Jima. Krulak's leadership and innovative tactics earned him a reputation as a rising star in the Marine Corps.

In 1944, Krulak was promoted to lieutenant colonel and given command of the 2nd Marine Regiment. He led the regiment during the Battle of Saipan and the Battle of Tinian. Krulak's regiment was one of the first to use amphibious tractors to land on the beaches of Saipan. This innovation helped to reduce Marine casualties and contributed to the success of the operation.

Korean War

After World War II, Krulak served in a variety of staff assignments. In 1951, he was promoted to brigadier general and assigned to command the 1st Marine Division in Korea. Krulak led the division during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The battle was one of the most difficult and costly battles of the Korean War. Krulak's leadership and determination helped to ensure the survival of the division.

Vietnam War

In 1964, Krulak was promoted to lieutenant general and assigned to command the III Marine Amphibious Force in Vietnam. Krulak led the force during the early stages of the war. He developed innovative tactics and strategies to counter the Viet Cong's guerrilla warfare. Krulak's leadership helped to stabilize the situation in Vietnam and contributed to the success of the U.S. war effort.

Later Years

In 1968, Krulak retired from the Marine Corps after 34 years of service. He continued to serve his country as a civilian, working as a consultant and lecturer. Krulak wrote several books on military history and amphibious warfare. He also served as the chairman of the Marine Corps Historical Foundation.
