The first Ryder Cup was held at the Wentworth Club in England, and the United States team emerged victorious. The event has been held every two years since then, with the exception of 1939-1945 during World War II.
The Format of the Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup is played over three days, with 28 matches taking place in total. On the first day, there are four fourball matches (two players from each team play their own ball) and four foursomes matches (two players from each team play alternate shots). On the second day, there are four fourball matches and four foursomes matches. On the third day, there are 12 singles matches (each player plays against an opponent).
The team that wins the most matches wins the Ryder Cup. If the teams are tied after all 28 matches have been played, the team that won the most points in the matches that were played (each match is worth one point) wins the Ryder Cup.
The History of the Ryder Cup
The United States team has won the Ryder Cup 26 times, while the European team has won 14 times. The two teams have tied twice.
Some of the most memorable moments in Ryder Cup history include:
- In 1969, the United States team rallied from a 10-6 deficit to win the Ryder Cup on the final day.
- In 1985, Europe won the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years.
- In 2012, Europe won the Ryder Cup by a record 14.5 points to 3.5 points.
