Ellis's journey to China was a transformative experience for him. He had long been fascinated by the country, and he was eager to see it for himself. He was particularly interested in the Chinese Revolution, and he hoped to gain a better understanding of how the country had changed since the Communist Party came to power in 1949.

Ellis's travels took him to Beijing, Shanghai, and other major cities. He met with Chinese officials, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens. He visited factories, schools, and hospitals. He also witnessed the Tiananmen Square protests, which were taking place at the time of his visit.

Ellis's experiences in China were complex and often contradictory. He was impressed by the country's economic progress and its people's热情, but he was also troubled by the government's authoritarianism and its suppression of dissent.

In Australian Bush to Tiananmen Square, Ellis shares his unique perspective on China. He offers a vivid account of his travels, and he provides insightful analysis of the country's past, present, and future.

Ellis's book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about China. It is a personal account of a transformative journey, and it offers a unique perspective on one of the world's most populous and important countries.

Excerpt from Australian Bush to Tiananmen Square

I arrived in Beijing on the morning of 2 June 1982. It was a hot, smoggy day, and the city was thronged with people. I had come to China to see for myself the country that had been so long closed to the outside world. I was interested in the Chinese Revolution, and I hoped to gain a better understanding of how the country had changed since the Communist Party came to power in 1949.

I spent the next few weeks traveling around China. I visited factories, schools, and hospitals. I met with Chinese officials, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens. I also witnessed the Tiananmen Square protests, which were taking place at the time of my visit.

My experiences in China were complex and often contradictory. I was impressed by the country's economic progress and its people's热情, but I was also troubled by the government's authoritarianism and its suppression of dissent.

In the end, I came away from China with a sense of hope and optimism. I believe that China is a country with a great future. However, I also believe that the country faces many challenges, and that it will take time for it to achieve its full potential.
